Karla Bruntzel, PhD, ATC, LAT joined the College in fall 2016 as Dean of Health Sciences.
Karla earned a doctorate in biomedical sciences/biomechanics from Leeds University in the United Kingdom in 2000, a master’s in sports sciences in 1988 from the University of Denver in Colorado, and a bachelor’s in athletic training in 1986 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Prior to this appointment, she was at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri where she served in a number of roles between 2003 and 2016 including professor, chair of the Division of Health Sciences, and dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. She has extensive teaching and leadership experience in higher education holding previous positions as director of athletic training education at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, coordinator of health professions program—also at Westminster College; head athletic trainer/instructor and director of athletic training education at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. While working on her doctorate at the University of Leeds she held a teaching assistant position in biomechanics and kinesiology.
She published, “Introduction to the Health Professions—A Course Designed for the ‘Pre-Med’ Student” in the journal The Advisor, and has presented at conferences in the United States, Sydney, Australia; Manchester, England; and Rome, Italy including publishing her presentation abstracts.
She is a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, the Missouri Athletic Trainer’s Association—MoATA, and the MidAmerica Athletic Trainer’s Association. She is the chair of the Conference Registration Committee for the MidAmerica Athletic Trainer’s Association and a member of the organizing committee. In 2014 she was awarded the MoATA Outstanding Athletic Trainer of the Year.
Karla has served on numerous college committees over the years including graduate studies, curriculum, internship review task force, allied health, institutional technology, and institutional assessment. She has also served on the on-line program advisory board and the Institutional Review Board.
