Begemann recipient of Michelle Neville Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Eric Begemann has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 spring semester Michelle Neville Memorial Nursing Scholarship of $1,500. Begemann has one semester left in his B.S.N. program. Applicants must be nominated by College faculty, staff, or Saint Luke’s Health System employees.

The Michelle Neville Memorial Nursing Scholarship is awarded annually to a nursing student who exhibits the caring spirit of nursing –sensitivity, creativity, intelligent understanding, and who has a sense of humor and compassion that meant so much to Neville.

Donations of medications solicited by students for Haiti trip

A group of 20 Saint Luke’s College students are soliciting donations of medicines in preparation their Spring Break mission trip to Haiti March 7, 2014. The list of medications includes both prescription and common over-the-counter drugs. Powered baby formula can also be donated. "Of course we can't accept a patient prescribed medicine, so we're hoping people will collect pharmaceutical samples from their family doctor or pharmaceutical companies," said Associate Professor Laurie Brooks. “All medications must be new and in their original container.” List of Needed Medications: Tums

College develops a new clinical model in partnership with Saint Luke's Health System

KANSAS CITY (January 28, 2014) - The Academic Service Partnership is a clinical instruction method which began fall 2013 within the Adult Health and Complex Care courses. Tenets of the model include: Deployment of nurse preceptors as clinical instructors Apprenticeship learning environment where baccalaureate prepared staff nurses have an active, although reduced patient load Low, 2:1 student/Clinical Instructor ratios Faculty who serve as facilitators tracking overall learning outcomes

Student scholarships were awarded to 139 applicants

Saint Luke’s College awarded $150,000 in student scholarships for the spring 2014 semester. The generosity of alumni and friends has resulted in 139 student recipients. “That’s the good news,” said Jennifer Wright Financial Aid Administer for the College. “The bad news is we had 171 applicants—many more applicants than in past years and so we weren’t able to provide an award for all applicants.”

Ten students receive scholarships from Baptist Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation

The Baptist Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation awards several scholarships each year. Of the 21 scholarships awarded, 10 Saint Luke’s College students were recipients.

“This is a scholarship opportunity that students apply for on their own,” said Jennifer Wright, Financial Aid Administrator for the College.

“They are putting in extra effort to find outside resources to help cover tuition/fees. We should be proud to have so many of our own students receive a scholarship … Outstanding students!”

College ventilator loaned to area hospital

Flu season appears to be in full force in the Kansas City area according to local news agencies. Saint Luke's College is supporting local healthcare efforts as well. "I received a call from a local hospital asking if we could loan out our ventilator," said Simulation Center Director Cindy Bradley. "At this point in the semester we aren't using our ventilator for student simulation experiences, so we are happy to to loan it out."
