Students Volunteer for Stroke Walk

Saint Luke's College students provided first aid at the American Stroke Foundation's annual walk along Brush Creek and helped stroke survivors to raise funds for free rehabilitation and support services in the metro. This activity was organized by the Saint Luke’s Student Nursing Association.

Student Volunteers for 5K Run

B.S.N. students volunteered August 24th to provide first aid and runner support at Heart to Heart International's 5K Trail Run for Haiti. Heart to Heart raises funds for cholera and sanitation programs.

New Post-Graduate Certificate Program

When school reopens this fall, Saint Luke’s College will begin offering three post-graduate nursing certificates: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practioner, Nurse Educator, and Nursing Informatics. “These are designed for practicing nurses who already have a M.S.N. and who wish to advance their careers with additional graduate training,” said Dr. James Hauschildt, academic dean at Saint Luke’s College.

Students gain critical operating room experience

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (May 22, 2013) - Assistant Professor Sharon White-Lewis is teaching one of the only Perioperative Nursing electives in the Kansas City, a two-week course designed to give students operating room experience. She converted a room in the College Simulation Center into an operating suite where students could be introduced to “scrub” and “circulate” activities nurses perform in the operating room.

Students spend eight days in operating rooms at Saint Luke’s Hospital performing these roles during live operations.

Reception Honors Faculty Accomplishments

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 5, 2013). At a May 5th reception Saint Luke’s College faculty and staff recognized faculty who have published, given conference presentations, or are pursuing a doctorate.

Dr. Anne Brett is Graduation Speaker

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 4, 2013) – Graduation ceremonies for Saint Luke’s College will be 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10th at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City. Dr. Anne Brett, president of Cox College in Springfield, Missouri is the keynote speaker. Cox College is affiliated with CoxHealth.

Operation Breakthrough Bus Tour

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Apr. 17, 2013) – In April students in the Community Centered Care class toured neighborhoods in Kansas City served by Operation Breakthrough, a non-profit organization.

This class introduces student community nursing invulnerable populations to help them better understand the struggles poor working parents face.

SUGAR members hold workshop

Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences hosted the Simulation Users Group Across the Region (SUGAR) for an afternoon workshop Thursday, April 4. The session featured five presentations by simulation directors who shared their experiences and discussed challenges.

Speakers discussed a variety of topics including how to teach cultural competency as part of a simulation, best practices for using a simulation experience to train life- flight nurses, and managing simulations to include an entire care team including a doctor, nurse, and social worker.
