You’ve heard it before, “Hard work is the key to success.” At Saint Luke’s College, we work hard to ensure our students’ success. When students expressed a need for enhanced support, we partnered with Dr. Howard and Nancy Aks to create the Student Resource Center (SRC).
The Aks family has provided a student scholarship which honors Howard’s parents, Dr. Daniel and Doris Aks for a number of years. But as the College developed the SRC, they provided a lead gift of $30,000 which enabled the College to obtain another matching gift.
Today the SRC employs two full-time professional advisors who provide a menu of student support akin to the kind of support and assistance that large universities provide to their top athletes.
Since fall of 2016, the SRC has surveyed students and launched several programs based on their feedback. “We are student advocates and can bring their concerns to deans and faculty to improve our programs,” said Academic Advisor Christian Cooper, MS. “My job is to ensure students succeed and I love that.”
Student feedback pushed the SRC staff to offer the Everything You Need to Know About Nursing School but Are Afraid to Ask workshop this January. Over 65, first-semester juniors attended the event. The student Peer Mentors led the event and fielded questions from course expectations to book requirements. Peer Mentors are high performing students chosen to assist BSN students.
Another initiative of the SRC is course review sessions. These Peer Mentor sessions give students the opportunity to review content for upcoming exams and seek additional help from Peer Mentors. Participation in these sessions has jumped 200% from the same time last fall.
The SRC goes beyond academic support and provides an environment for students to relax and have fun. In their spring 2017 kick-off event, they hosted a Week of Welcome (WOW). The WOW event included a selfie scavenger hunt that took participants to specific campus locations familiarizing students with the campus, faculty, and staff.
The SRC staff has their eye on the future. They plan to offer more study sessions and will take over the orientation of new students in the fall of 2017. They developed a new SRC online portal through the Desire 2 Learn system to provide resources and online video tutorials to assist online learners in the RN-BSN program. They plan to grow this portal after students weigh in on its usefulness.
“We offer a calming space and a support service for those students wanting to make the most of their Saint Luke’s College experience and education,” said Academic Advisor Sue McLaughlin, MDiv, DMin.
Everyone benefits when donors like the Aks become involved in the College — believe in our mission and the vision of a project — and then partner with us for critical expansion.
