Kansas City, Mo. (June 6, 2014) –The $2,000 scholarship award from the Renée Pernice Memorial Nursing Scholarship goes to Samantha Healy, a B.S.N. recipient who will graduate in December 2014.

Family and friends established the scholarship in 2009 to celebrate Renée’s love of nursing and Saint Luke’s College.

Renée had been teaching at the College for two years when her husband took her life on January 2, 2009. She left behind two young sons, parents, sister and brother, along with numerous other family members, friends, and work colleagues who love her deeply.

She graduated from the University of Kansas-School of Nursing in 1996. She received a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Missouri -Kansas City in December of 2007. She worked as a nurse in the Saint Luke’s Hospital System from 1996 until joining the faculty at Saint Luke’s College in 2007.

“She was a very professional and caring nurse who loved working in the emergency department,” said Jan Whitlow after talking with Renée’s family when they visited the College in June 2014.

“She had a passion for the nursing profession and derived great pride and joy from being a staff member at Saint Luke’s College.”

“Renée’s family has really committed themselves to raising money for their scholarship fund, so they can honor Renée and support a nursing student in college,” said Whitlow who is senior director of development and alumni relations at the College.

The Renée Pernice Memorial Nursing Scholarship is awarded to a third semester, full-time, traditional B.S.N nursing student who exhibits Renée’s caring spirit of nursing. The $2,000 scholarship will help with expenses for the recipient’s final semester of the program.
