Each year Saint Luke's College selects outstanding B.S.N. students to receive the Dick Howser Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The two-year scholarships are given in memory of former Royals manager, Dick Howser, who led the Royals to their 1985 World Series Championship.
The scholarship fund was started following Howser's death from a brain tumor in 1987, in appreciation of the nurses who cared for him during his stay at Saint Luke's Hospital. These scholarships are made possible by the generous support of the Kansas City community and the Howser family.
On Wednesday, September 18, The Kansas City Royals, Saint Luke's College of Health Sciences and Saint Luke's Foundation recognized the recipients of this year's scholarships at the Royals game: John Bockelman, Laura Bunjer, Danielle Freeman, and Travis Robertson. Also photographed with them is Nancy Howser, and Dr. James Hauschildt, academic dean at Saint Luke’s College.
